May 22 was selected as National Maritime Day because it was the day that the American steamship Savannah set sail from Georgia. It was on the first transoceanic voyage powered by steam.
The SS Savannah was an American hybrid sailing ship/sidewheel steamer that was built in 1818. Because it was not a commercial success, it was converted back to a sailing ship not long after returning from Europe. It should be noted that there was no other American-owned ship to cross the Atlantic for almost 30 years later.
This day recognizes the maritime industry and was created in 1933.

If you are not a film buff, you may not know who Eliza Doolittle was. Eliza was a character played by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (in the film adaptation, of course). The holiday comes from the scene that Eliza sings about being famous and proclaiming Eliza Doolittle Day.
