Well today is Thanksgiving. And we should all take some time to observe what this day stands for. I remember when I was younger, I hated it when I was asked to talk about things that I was thankful for on this this. But right now I think it is very relevant. So, what are you thankful for this year?
Today is also known as Shopping Reminder Day. Thanksgiving typically is the kick-off day for the Christmas shopping season. I don’t know about you, but I tend to avoid shopping the weekend following Thanksgiving because of the crowds. But many people really enjoy shopping during this weekend. Friday is referred to as Black Friday
So in celebration of this day (and the upcoming weekend), I thought I would share a few facts about Thanksgiving and the shopping weekend.
- By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.
- The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was beer.
- The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
- The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817.
- The term ‘Black Friday’ has been traced back only to the 1970s and did not achieve widespread popularity until about 2002.
- Black Friday is not the biggest shopping day of the year. The biggest days typically occur within the week before Christmas.
- Some believe the term came from Osberger’s Department Store. You can read more about it here: Osberger’s Department Store
