Top Ten Signs You are addicted to Nutella

Top Ten Signs You are addicted to Nutella

When I discovered that Feb 5 is World Nutella Day, I was very excited. If you haven’t ever tried Nutella, you should make a point to try it today. It is truly one of the great food experiences. If you have tried it, I’m sure that you know what I am talking about. Nutella is a chocolate and hazelnut spread that from the moment I tried it I was hooked!

Nutella was created in 1949 by Pietro Ferrero, a pastry maker and founder of the Ferrero company. At the time, there was very little chocolate because cocoa was in short supply due to World War II rationing.

So Mr. Ferrero used hazelnuts, which are plentiful in the Piedmont region of Italy (northwest), to extend the chocolate supply. It was originally called Supercrema.

In 1963, Pietro’s son Michele revamped Supercrema with the intention of marketing it across Europe. He modified it and renamed it Nutella. The first jar of Nutella left the Ferrero factory in Alba on 20 April 1964. The product was an instant success and remains widely popular.

I don’t think I have found anything that does not go well with Nutella. Spread it on bread, waffles, or bagels. How about making a Banana-Nutella Smoothie. It also makes really good hot chocolate. Or try some Nutella S’mores?

Here are a couple of recipes you could try:

Banana-Nutella Smoothie

  • 1 cup Nutella spread
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cups vanilla yogurt
  • 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 4 medium frozen bananas

Combine Nutella, peanut butter, yogurt, milk and bananas in a blender. For thinner texture, ice cubes and process until ice is crushed. Pour into glasses.

Nutella Chili Hot Chocolate

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder (more or less according to your taste)
  • 6 cups low-fat or non-fat milk
  • 1 cup Nutella

Put all ingredients in a 4-quart saucepan and bring to boil over medium heat, Whisking until smooth and remove from heat to steep for 10 to 15 minutes (the longer the steeping, the “hotter” the drink). Reheat hot chocolate over medium heat to desired temperature and serve.

Whatever you do, make sure to enjoy this delicious treat today.
